This season Nike's BeTrue collection celebrates pride by honouring LGBTQIA+ communities worldwide. The Nike React Infinity Run FK 2 BeTrue, with it's smooth ride courtesy of React Cushioning, comes with 9 hook-and-loop flags that represent the multiple communities of gender identities and sexual orientations - so now you can choose what's true to you with bold colours that make a lasting statement on your next run.
A few questions for VRC Run Leader Fergus Kung
Q1. Why do you run?
_____
I'd say I mainly run for my physical and mental health. But sometimes, it's a dedicated time slot to think through problems, get some reading done, or just enjoy some fresh air. Sometimes it's to run for those who can't, and help out causes larger than myself. It's a reminder of the power in consistency, and how much progress one can make by saying yes and showing up. And of course, sometimes it's simply fun to catch up with friends.
I also think representation continues to be important. Not that it's everything, but I'm trying to do my part by existing in a space where a queer Asian isn't the usual demographic to say "hey, I deserve to be here as much as anyone else". At the end of the day, you're a runner if you run, and I hope people get to partake in that shared experience.
Q2. Tell us why you believe the BeTrue collection from Nike is an important initiative.
_____
I recall seeing Nike as one of the first brands to not only create a custom collection for pride month, but also in actively promoting and donating to LGBTQIA+ creators and causes. As a bonus, there's always been a staple running shoe picked for the initiative. It's important to me that Nike isn't simply performative about their allyship, as opposed to others that have joined the trend of "corporate pride" and think it's enough to sell merchandise in rainbow, while not highlighting and advocating for the real issues at hand.
Q3. What do you think of the BeTrue Nike Infinity React Flyknit 2?
_____
It's probably my personal favourite. Since Nike introduced their React foam with the Epic React, the Infinity React 2 (and all its predecessors) have been my everyday go-to for easy runs and long run Sundays. It's a consistent experience that's very durably built and well-cushioned. Not that I recommend this for everyone, but I've taken every pair I've owned to 1000km before I felt the need to retire them.
