When you sign up to an event without knowing exactly what it is, that’s half the fun, right?
October 11, close to 150 people chose to find their fate at We Fly Vancouver knowing little more than what time to show up. As 6:00pm approached an electric atmosphere filled the store, race bibs were allocated and 5k PBs were discussed. Soon after we departed and the group were lead to the (secret) start line as the sun began to set.
Gathered in anticipation at the start, the team from Nike Canada finally revealed to the runners the idea behind the event - push yourself to your limits and beyond; run hard to try and beat your 5k PB, but the only competition is yourself. The overall goal? Beat your PB by the highest percentage - there were prizes at stake.
An ambitious task for some, nerves turned into excitement as some laughed over their predicted time realizing what they had now gotten themselves into, with others ready to give it all they had to chase that PB down on the seawall.
The best part of this race? With no official ‘winner’, the slower predicted times started first with the fastest predicted times heading out last, and everyone was on course at once. The route was a flat and fast out-and-back - perfect for mid-race cheers and high-fives.
Noise mounted as the finish line filled with runners cheering each other over the line, everyone keen to know what time they clocked, but with only a timing chip to tell their official result, it was back to the store for the next reveal.
Celebratory beers and pizzas in hand, the biggest PB was rewarded with the tools to make them even faster next time - a fit session and brand new pair of shoes from the all new Nike Zoom series; Pegasus 35, Pegasus 35 Turbo or Zoom Fly Flyknit.
The Vancouver running community never disappoints, and the chance to showcase some of our incredible brand partnerships with awesome events like this is what fuels the fire and keeps us running week after week. Swing into Vancouver Running Co. with your race bib or ID and pick-up your exclusive We Fly Vancouver finishers medal along with 10% off any purchase made when you collect your hardware.
Big thanks to Nike for making it happen, and to everyone who came ready to embrace the unknown.
