Jay Grandin

Dad to twins and head honcho at Giant Ant, Jay has become the speed record holder in getting changed before Flight Crew runs. His mum’s biggest fan and a lover of naps, you’ll catch him leading the fast boys (and girls) at the front of our Thursday 10k road routes.

How long have you been running for?
I started running very casually and occasionally about 10 years ago, but fell in love with is as a pastime about 5 years ago

Where is your favourite place to run?
The North Shore mountains! But the seawall will do :)

Describe your best running memory
In 2014 I did my first (only) ultra marathon in Iceland. It felt incredible to cover so much distance through such unfamiliar terrain, using only my feet. I had a smile on my face almost the entire way, literally.

What is your favourite post-run treat?
A nap.

Why did you start running with Flight Crew?
I met Rob and Becky on a plane, and we instantly became running buddies. When they started Flight Crew, it sounded like the perfect way to spend my Thursday nights, surrounded by great people.

Your favourite Flight Crew memory?
The first summer social was very special. The crew was young, but we were overwhelmed by almost 100 people.

What’s the running achievement you’re most proud of?
I've always looked up to my Mom as a runner, and recently beat her 10k PB. To me, that was the moment that I was allowed to call myself a runner without feeling like an imposter.

What’s your favourite item of running clothing/accessory?
I LOVE my Salomon Sense shoes, and have had many pairs of them. Delicious.

If you could run with anyone in the world who would it be and why?
My Mom... because she's my Mom.

Favourite running distance?
I did my first two 10k races this year, which I really enjoyed! It's a painful distance, but I like a bit of pain sometimes.
