Devon McGuire

Boston marathoner Devon has been running around Vancouver for 13 years and still isn’t sick of the seawall. Try and take her Garmin you’ll regret it, but you can always win her heart with ice cream.

How long have you been running for?
Since 2004—this is my 13th year running!

Where is your favourite place to run?
Hard to pick one place, but probably west along Spanish Banks or around the sea wall.

Describe your best running memory
Crossing the finish line at the Eugene Marathon and knowing I had qualified for Boston

What is your favourite post-run treat?
May not be considered a treat, but I crave an eat2run recovery smoothie bowl after every long or hard run. Other than that, I can't turn down ice cream, no matter the season

Why did you start running with Flight Crew?
I had popped into the shop a couple of times and liked the vibe I got. A couple of my friends stopped by Flight Crew so I decided to join them one night over a year and a half ago, and have been running with them ever since!

Your favourite Flight Crew memory?
Tough question, but Wings for Life was pretty special; there is something about running at 4am in the dark and quiet of night that bonds people....and the post-run breakfast with the gang was pretty amazing too!

What’s the running achievement you’re most proud of?
On a personal level, it would have to be qualifying to run the Boston Marathon; it was a testament to pure drive, determination and incredible stubbornness! But it's also all of the wonderful friends I've made and helping other people reach their goals, sometimes with something as simple as a smile or high five.

What’s your favourite item of running clothing/accessory?
My Garmin; I feel like I'm missing my whole arm if I don't have it!

If you could run with anyone in the world who would it be and why?
My grandma. She was a track star in her day and held the High School World Record with her 4x400m relay team in the 1920's. She was a pretty formidable lady and I wish I took the chance to learn more about her running career before she was gone.

Favourite running distance?
The half marathon. It's short enough that you can always fit training in, even with a busy life but it's long enough that it always will present you a challenge and will keep you honest.
