Subject 4/5: Foot Strike
.
Foot strike describes which zone of the foot contacts the ground first while running: forefoot, mid-foot or heel. Where a runner's foot strikes directly relates to their biomechanics, and can be adjusted over time with training, strength exercises and different footwear. A forefoot and mid-foot strike has long been thought to minimize impact forces on the body, while heel striking has been thought as something to avoid. Each person is made up differently, and therefore runs differently, so running efficiency as a result of foot strike varies from one person to the next. Some of the world’s fastest marathoners just so happen to be heel strikers…food for thought.
